Brief Introduction to the Data Structure of SFP Optical Modules
Time: 2019-02-28
1. Description of the SFP Optical Module Data Structure
As a universal photoelectric conversion module, the SFP optical module has uniform specifications for its structure, hardware and software to ensure broad compatibility with a wider range of host devices. The unified software specification is SFF-8472, which defines the data structures of A0h and A2h in detail. Hosts can access the data via a two-wire interface, as shown in Figure 1 below:

Figure 1: A0h & A2h Data Structure Table
2. Description of the A0h Data Structure
The 256 bytes of A0h mainly contain identification information about the optical module, including basic module details such as manufacturer name, manufacturer model, serial number, connector type, wavelength, transmission distance, and production date. Specific definitions may vary among different host manufacturers, which is commonly referred to as the coding differences of devices from various brands.
3. Description of the A2h Data Structure
A2h mainly contains the functional data of the module. During normal operation, this data area is generally set to write-protected mode to prevent data tampering that may affect the module’s normal use. This data table includes information such as module operation alarm thresholds, Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DOM or DDM) functions, several status control bytes, as well as module calibration and debugging data.
The digital diagnostic function defined in A2h can greatly assist operation and maintenance personnel in checking the status of links and device ports during daily equipment use, thereby judging whether the equipment is working properly. Currently, mainstream switches on the market support the recognition of the digital diagnostic function. Real-time data can be displayed by simply entering host commands, and the statuses of ports at all network nodes can also be managed simultaneously through network management software, facilitating timely troubleshooting and network maintenance.
