GPON, short for Gigabit-Capable PON, is the latest generation of integrated broadband passive optical access standard based on the ITU-T G.984.x standard. It features advantages including high bandwidth, high efficiency, large coverage and rich user interfaces, and is regarded by most operators as the ideal technology for realizing broadband and integrated transformation of access network services.

GPON supports a maximum transmission rate of 2.5Gbps with an SC interface. Like all PON systems, GPON consists of Optical Line Terminals (OLTs), Optical Network Units (ONUs) and Splitters.
OLT (Optical Line Terminal): It is mainly installed at the central control station, with a transmission rate of TX 2.488Gbps/RX 1.244Gbps and operating wavelengths of TX 1490nm/RX 1310nm.
ONU (Optical Network Unit): It is mainly installed on the user side of the network, with a transmission rate of TX 1.244Gbps/RX 2.488Gbps and operating wavelengths of TX 1310nm/RX 1490nm. The ONU converts optical signals transmitted via optical fibers into electrical signals and sends these electrical signals to individual users. Meanwhile, it collects and organizes different types of user data before transmitting them to the OLT.
Splitters: These devices distribute signals from the OLT to each connected ONU.
The following figure shows the general architecture of a GPON system:

The market demand for OLTs is much lower than that for ONUs, because PON adopts a Point-to-Multipoint (PsMP) architecture—one OLT can support 32, 64 or 128 ONUs.
Currently, Moduletek provides GPON OLT modules in B+, C+ and C++ grades. Generally, GPON OLT B+ can support 32 ONUs within a 20km range; GPON OLT C+ can support 64 ONUs within 20km. GPON OLT C++ boasts higher transmit optical power and better receiving sensitivity, but its market demand remains very low due to higher costs and overcapacity for most application scenarios.
