MikroTik is a network equipment manufacturer headquartered in Latvia. The company develops and markets wired and wireless routers, network switches, wireless access points and other networking products. Founded in 1996, it had a workforce of 280 employees in 2019 and was reportedly the 20th largest company in Latvia. The brand’s products currently enjoy a sizeable user base in China, with numerous merchants distributing them on Taobao.
To gain a deeper insight into MikroTik’s product design, we purchased a MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S switch and performed a simple teardown analysis. Without further ado, let’s look at the details below with images:

Figure 2: Accessories Included with the MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S Switch
The MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S switch comes with an external power supply and mounting accessories in the package. Notably, the bundle also includes a large heatsink.

Once the switch is taken out of the box, you can clearly see the large heatsink on its rear panel, as well as the port for the external power supply.
Figure 4: Front Panel of the MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S Switch
The front panel is equipped with 8 10G SFP+ ports. The switch adopts a fanless design, making it ideal for high-end users to place on their office desks or at home. It can be used to connect high-performance workstations or gaming consoles to build a 10G network, completely free from the disturbance of fan noise.
Figure 5: Internal Structure of the MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S Switch
When you open the switch, you will find that the heatsink is connected to the main switching chip via two heat pipes, which eliminates the need for active fan cooling.
Figure 6: Main Switching Chip of the MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S Switch
After removing the heatsink, we can identify that the switch uses the Marvell Aldrin 98DX8208 switching chip. According to the datasheet, the power consumption of this chip exceeds 12W.
