With the communication industry imposing increasingly higher requirements for transmission rates and signal quality, 10G-rate optical modules are now being widely adopted in the market. However, there is another product available on the market: the SFP+ electrical port module. This product has relatively limited adoption, so what are the advantages and disadvantages of SFP+ electrical port modules in practical use?

1. Application, Advantages and Disadvantages of SFP+ Electrical Port Modules
The interface of an SFP+ electrical port module is identical to that of SFP+ optical modules and SFP+ high-speed cables. Compared with SFP+ optical modules, SFP+ electrical port modules offer a shorter transmission distance—currently, ModuleTek’s SFP+ electrical port modules support a transmission distance of 30 meters. Nevertheless, as electrical ports connect to network cables, the module offers lower deployment costs. In contrast to SFP+ high-speed cables, SFP+ electrical port modules provide a longer transmission distance, more convenient cabling, and greater flexibility in system deployment, while SFP+ high-speed cables feature a lower cost.
2. Applications of SFP+ Electrical Port Modules
ModuleTek’s SFP+ electrical port modules support six different rates, namely 10M, 100M, 1000M, 2.5G, 5G, and 10G. Different types of network cables are required for different rate environments, and the corresponding transmission distances also vary, as shown in the table below:

SFP+ electrical port modules serve two primary application scenarios as follows:
As shown in Figure 2, two SFP+ electrical port modules are connected via a network cable and then respectively connected to two 10G optical port switches.
Figure 2: Application Scenario 1 of SFP+ Electrical Port Modules
As shown in Figure 3, an SFP+ electrical port module is inserted into a 10G optical port switch, and the opposite end is connected via a network cable to a 10M/100M/1000M/2.5G/5G/10G electrical port switch.
