By default, Cisco switches perform authenticity validation on inserted optical modules. If a module is identified as non-Cisco original, the switch may shut down the port, trigger an alarm, or display a warning message. Cisco also provides hidden commands to allow the use of third-party optical modules.
Take the Cisco WS-C4500X-16 switch as an example to enable third-party module support:
1. When a third-party module is installed on a Cisco switch, the module fails to link up. The port LED flashes orange, the interface stays down or goes into errdisable state, and the module is recognized as "Unsupported" or "Unapproved".
2. In global configuration mode, execute the following commands in sequence to disable the switch's optical module validation and allow third-party modules:
service unsupported-transceiver
no errdisable detect cause gbic-invalid
Note: These are hidden commands and cannot be found using the ? key. To retain the configuration after a reboot, save the settings with this command:
copy running-config startup-config
3. fter enabling third-party module support, the module will link up and be recognized normally.
4. In global configuration mode, execute the following commands in sequence to disable third-party module support:
no service unsupported-transceiver
errdisable detect cause gbic-invalid
