Managed switches are generally equipped with console interfaces. Connected to a computer’s serial port or USB port via a dedicated console cable, these interfaces allow users to configure switches through a terminal emulation program. They support core management functions including initial configuration, device status viewing, and fault troubleshooting.
To use a switch console interface, connect the PC serial port (or USB-to-serial adapter) to the switch console port using a console cable. Launch a terminal emulation program such as PuTTY or Tera Term on the PC, then configure corresponding communication parameters including baud rate, data bits and stop bits.

Switch console ports are available in multiple physical form factors. Based on the test equipment in Moduletek Laboratory, common console interface types are listed below, among which the RJ45 RS232 serial port is the most prevalent.

Console interface markings vary across different brands and switch models. Users unfamiliar with these markings may mistake the console port for other functional interfaces or fail to locate it correctly. Below are common console interface icons for reference.

Notes:
1. A dedicated console cable is usually included as original factory accessories for direct use. If not provided, select a cable matching the switch console port type; RJ45-to-DB9 serial cable is the most common option.
2. Console communication parameters are factory default settings. You can check the switch datasheet to obtain default values, or log into the device to modify them manually.
Standard default parameters: Baud rate 9600, Data bits 8, Stop bit 1, No parity, No flow control.
3. Certain console cables require driver installation before use, such as USB-C to USB-A cables.
